List Honors Schools That Best Meet the Needs of Military and Veteran Students
(Leavenworth, Kan.)—For the second consecutive year, the University of Saint Mary has been honored as a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine, a designation that puts USM among the top 20 percent of U.S. colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace military service members and veterans as students.
According G.I. Jobs, a publication of Victory Media, schools on the 2012 Military Friendly Schools list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience. They also offer additional benefits to students, including on-campus veterans program, key discounts, and more. USM, for its part, is a VA Yellow Ribbon Program participant, and has an on-campus office for veterans services and a veterans services coordinator.
The list was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey that saw G.I. Jobs poll more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Nationally, 1,518 schools made the list.
"The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience," said Michael Dakduk, executive director for the Student Veterans of America. "Nothing is more compelling than actual feedback from current student veterans."
Carlton Philpot, USM's veterans services coordinator and a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, said "Saint Mary always feels proud, privileged, and honored to be able to serve and support our country's veterans, active duty personnel, and military families as they work to meet their academic goals."
USM Academic Vice President Dr. Bryan Le Beau added "we are honored to be considered among the colleges and universities in the nation that are doing the most for America's veterans as students."
"Veterans bring maturity, seriousness of purpose, and leadership to the classroom. As a member of the Leavenworth community, home to Fort Leavenworth, we willingly provide support for veterans. Most importantly, we do what we do for veterans because it is the right thing to do, to thank them for the service they have provided all of us, often at considerable personal sacrifice," said Dr. Le Beau.
A full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and on a poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. The newly redesigned website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the list, interactive tools, and search functionality to assist military veterans in choosing schools that best meet their personal educational needs.
G.I. Jobs www.gijobs.com is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business which also publishes The Guide to Military Friendly Schools, Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines and annually rates the nation's "Military Friendly Employers," "Military Spouse Friendly Employers" and "Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses."
